The oldest settlements of Samegrelo existed in the territory of Kolkheti lowland and its nearby hills as early as the Stone Age. The Kindom of Colchis was already known to the whole of the ancient world by the 8th c. BC. It was in Colchis that the first Georgian money was minted – the Colchian tetri. The pre-Christian Kingdom of Colchis, that existed on the territory of Western Georgia was the first Georgian state mentioned in Greek history and mythology as remarkable and mysterious country where the Argonauts sailed to carry away the Golden Fleece.

Departure from Kutaisi to Samegrelo region.
Visit to Dadiani Palace - summer residence of rulers of Samegrelo region. The fund of the museum contains 50 000 items, archaeological and ethnographic materials, private belongings of the last Prince of Samegrelo, documents illustrating Georgia's relations with other countries, unique patterns of goldsmith (icons. crosses, church utensils, patterns of original art).

Departure to Martvili, visiting one of the unique site of Georgia - Martvili Canyons. Over millions of years, the water has created breathtaking gorgen limestone rocks, reaching a depth of 40 meters, at the bottom of which actually the river flows. The total length of the canyon is one kilometer available to reach. In the upper part of the canyon, you can take a boat trip and reach the very beginning with 7 meter high powerful waterfall. Martvili looks and feels like a paradise not only because of its beautiful nature and amazing sites but also because of its inhabitants, who welcome guests in a tradition of warmth and hospitality. Martvili district is truly one of the greatest places in Georgia combining unique natural environment with historical monuments.

Picnic on the open air. Have you ever tried to make Georgian barbeque? So it is the very moment to do it!

Visiting the Martvili female Monastery(built in VI-VII c.). Its monastery was Samegrelo's clerical centre in the Middle Ages.
On the way back from Martvili to Kutaisi you will visit Nokalakevi prison,  the site was known to early Byzantine historians as Archaeopolis, and to the neighbouring Georgian (Kartlian) chroniclers as Tsikhegoji, or the fortress of Kuji — a semi-mythical Colchian ruler or 'Eristavi'. It was one of the key fortresses guarding Lazika (modern Mingrelia) from Sasanian, Persian and Iberian (East Georgian/Kartlian) attack. During the war of AD 540-562, the Persians' failure to take Nokalakevi-Archaeopolis from the Byzantines and the Laz eventually cost them control of Lazika.
Departure back to Kutaisi.
